Area bike safety events are next week

MARSHALL — A warm spring day is the perfect time to go for a bike ride — and it’s also the perfect time to make sure you’re riding safely. That’s where local bike safety events come in. Marshall’s annual Bicycle Safety Extravaganza is coming up on Monday afternoon at the Marshall Area YMCA. In Walnut Grove, a bike safety rodeo will also be held on Wednesday at Walnut Grove Elementary.

This will be the 11th year Marshall’s Safety Extravaganza has been held, said Marshall Public Safety Director Rob Yant.

“It’ll be a nice event,” especially for families and kids, Yant said.

The Safety Extravaganza is organized and made possible by a variety of local organizations and businesses, as well as the city of Marshall, the YMCA, Healthy 56258 and the Marshall Area Crime Fund. The event will feature a bike skills course, where young cyclists can brush up on the rules of traffic safety while biking. The Safety Extravaganza is also a place where members of the public can learn more about local bike trails, and purchase safety gear like bike locks and helmets.

Another important opportunity at the Safety Extravaganza is the free bicycle registration, compliments of the Marshall Area Crime Fund. By registering their bicycles, local residents can help police identify their bikes if they’re ever lost or stolen. In Marshall, the registration program has been a big help in getting missing bikes back to their owners.

The Marshall Bicycle Safety Extravaganza will be from 4-7 p.m. Monday at the Marshall Area YMCA. There will be free hot dogs and fruit at the event, and community members can register for prize drawings at 4:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

This year, a bike safety rodeo will also be held at Walnut Grove Elementary. The bike rodeo will be from 1-3 p.m. Wednesday at the school.
