Return of Lilith Fair

March 23, 2010 - Cindy Votruba
Sometimes I’ll notice little advertisements by my Facebook newsfeed. This past week there was one for Lilith Fair 2010. Apparently singer Sarah McLachlan is kicking off the tour again after an 11-year absence. Back in 1997, she started a tour that featured female singers of different genres, from the Indigo Girls to the Dixie Chicks and from Natalie Merchant to Queen Latifah. Besides the mainstage, there was also a second stage and a Village stage that brought the likes of Lucinda Williams, Neko Case, Heather Nova and Martina McBride. I went to the first two years — 1997 and 1998 and got to hear Jewel, Shawn Colvin, Meredith Brooks and Joan Osbourne. Minnesota’s venue at the time was Canterbury Park in Shakopee. It was crowded and dusty and I couldn’t really see the artists on the stage, but it was a great experience. The tour raised more than $10 million for women’s charities.

For Lilith Fair 2010, a couple of ‘80s female bands, the Go-Gos and the Bangles plan on performing. Other artists include Heart, Beth Orton, Norah Jones, Loretta Lynn, Martina McBride and of course, McLachlan. And there is a stop in Minneapolis. Still waiting on the venue and lineup, but I’m sure it will be great no matter what.
