I Love the '80s

July 1, 2008 - Cindy Votruba
I heard the song “A Million Miles” by the Plimsouls the other day on XM’s 80s on 8. I was trying to remember what movie it came from because I knew I had seen it before. So a quick Amazon search produced the “Valley Girl” soundtrack, which contains a few songs by the Plimsouls.

Sunday night, I rewatched “Valley Girl,” which stars a young Nic Cage (back when he was kinda cute). It’s a cheesy, but cute high school romance from 1983.

Now I was only in 5th grade back in 1983 and wore a school uniform, but I remember some of the fashions back then. One of the characters, Loryn, wears this memorable red jumpsuit. Remember jumpsuits? I personally didn’t have one, but I think I’ve seen them on people.

Then there was the “Valley Girl” lingo, like “grody to the max” and “fer sure.” I remember using some of that language back in the day, and it’s amusing to hear it again used in a regular conversation.

I’m almost tempted to rewatch a whole boatload of ‘80s movies, such as “Pretty in Pink” (I have the book also!), “Better Off Dead,” “Vision Quest,” “Some Kind of Wonderful” (My favorite) and there are countless others (several by John Hughes).

Man, I’m an ‘80s geek. I’ve gotta stop listening to XM 8.

BTW, there’s a cool Web site that shows trends, movies, music, etc. from different years, starting from 1968 through 1990. Remember Molly Ringwald? She’s currently featured on the site’s front page.
