A speech-y change of pace

April 9, 2010 - Deb Gau
Speech sections are upon us again this weekend. I'm going along with the Marshall team to help out. I can't actually judge this time (I'm not league-certified yet), although I can time rounds or manage the draw tables, where the kids in the extemporaneous events learn what they'll be speaking about that round.

It's gonna be kind of a milestone season, at least for me. This will be the first time since I started speech coaching that we've had a big group of kids (meaning more than two students) in the Discussion category, and the majority of them are completely new to speech. It's been awesome working with them, and I know they'll do well. They've certainly picked things up fast, I think partly because they've had to learn to work with each other, which is key in 'Disco.'

This will also be my third year coaching, which means I'm inching ever closer to meeting MSHSL certification requirements. Perhaps next year I could qualify to be a section judge.
