Marshall — my community

April 16, 2010 - Per Peterson
I attended my first United Way of Southwest Minnesota meeting Thursday as a member of 2010 Community Investment Committee and as I left, I thought about how professional athletes always say they want to give back to their community. That phrase was even brought up at the meeting. Then I thought, briefly, that technically I’m not a member of this community because I don’t live here. Actually, I don’t even live in Lyon County. But that thought faded quickly. I went to college in Marshall. I’ve worked here for 20 years. Where I live doesn’t matter, really, because I do feel like I’m a member of the Marshall community, which is a good thing, because I live out in the country. We don’t have communities in the country. With that said, I’ve officially adopted Marshall as my community, which I suppose I kind of already did when I took over as editor of the Independent — because as editor, I’m supposed to be the face of the paper. Those editorials you read every week? They’re written by me, so it’s important, I think, to get my face out there and get involved so people can put a face to the editorials. What better way to do it then join the United Way of Southwest Minnesota team.
