Patriotic email

May 28, 2010 - Per Peterson
I get bombarded with emails all day; if I had a buck for all the emails I get, I could quit my job. Hell, if I had a buck for all the emails I ignore and trash I could quit my job. Every day, we’re inundated with spam (junk mail) up to our eyeballs. It gets old quick. But one item I received Friday, which I thought was nothing more than more spam, turned out to be one of the best emails I’ve received in some time. It was sent from a former Independent employee and it was about Memorial Day — kind of a chain letter, only a good one. Here’s what it said: REALLY MAKES ME PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN

It is the VETERAN, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion. It is the VETERAN, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the VETERAN, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble. It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the VETERAN, not the politician, Who has given us the right to vote. It is the VETERAN who salutes the Flag, It is the VETERAN who serves under the Flag,

The email also contains that picture with the man at a parade (a veteran) who uses a wheelchair. The pic. shows him standing ever so cautiously as his fingertips still touch the side rails on his chair. It’s clear the the old photo that the man isn’t able to stand for very long periods of time, but he got up the strength to do it when the American Flag was present. The point of the pic. is that he is the only one standing. Kind of hits you right there, you know?
