Numbers from the mayor

July 23, 2010 - Per Peterson
I did a lengthy one-on-one with Marshall Mayor Bob Byrnes earlier this week and threw a number of questions at him about everything from Marshall’s business landscape, to dealing with LGA cuts. If you don’t know the mayor, I’ll tell you he’s a numbers guy and he threw a couple interesting ones at me that I didn’t get in the Q-and-A piece that was published in Saturday’s paper. Byrnes said that as of 2008 there were 15,175 jobs in Marshall. The first thing that comes to mind with that number is that Marshall’s population is less than 13,000. That tells you of the number of commuters who work in Marshall but don’t call it home. And, indeed, Byrnes had the numbers at his fingertips — 28.6 percent of those jobs are held by people who live within the city limits of Marshall. That means a whopping 72 percent of the people who work here don’t live here — more proof that Marshall is the true regional hub of Lyon County. There are many different ways to look at these numbers, and it points to the importance of keeping the rural transportation infrastructure maintained.
