Nellie comes to Walnut Grove

July 26, 2010 - Cindy Votruba

So I somehow found my way from Wood Lake to Walnut Grove Saturday afternoon to see Alison Arngrim at the city park. It wasn’t a tough route to follow using the county roads and a state highway. But by the time I got there, I was ready for lunch. Wandering around 20 minutes before Alison was to speak, the only options I really had were egg rolls, corn dogs and hot dogs and ice cream. I opted for the egg rolls and a Mountain Dew. There were quite a few people already gathered in front of the gazebo; Alison even mentioned talking from it. It was basically a question and answer session; people would walk up to a microphone and ask her questions. Some were about the show — what was your favorite episode to do (the “wheelchair” one, AKA “Bunny”), who were your role models growing up; which did you like better, wearing the wig or having your hair curled. I was surprised to find out that her mother did voices for cartoons, including Gumby. She kept the audience laughing with little quips here and there. Then came the autograph session. Before I had a chance to turn around, the line formed...and wound around the area. I had wanted to buy a book (which I did) and joined the line. Amy, the office manager of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum, and one of the museum board members were the official “end of the line” and I think I was past the cutoff. It didn’t really matter as the line was moving slowly and I had to be at church in Marshall by 5 (there was no chance of me even getting to the beginning of the line any time soon). So I gave my book to Amy to get it signed by Alison. One of these days I’ll have to somehow get it back. In the meantime, I took a few photos of people I don’t know having their book, photo, whatever signed by Alison. Cuz that’s what I do.
