A quick game of batminton

Last night my daughter, Vanessa, and I were in my bedroom watching "Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files" on the SyFy channel. The show featured a segment about a strange animal seen in the English countryside. People didn't know if it was a boar, a dog or a lion. Vanessa was absentmindedly playing with a badminton racquet while she watched TV.
Suddenly, we heard my other daughter, Cheyenne, yell, "Mom, Mom!" We ran out and Cheyenne said that there was a bat flying around. Yes, it was clear that this wasn't a bee, a bird or a bongo drum. It was a bat. I told Vanessa to stay in the bedroom but she didn't. I told Cheyenne, who was by the front door, to open the door so the bat could fly out. I was thinking about getting the broom and guiding the bat to the door, but Vanessa whacked it with the badminton racket instead. It lay still on the living room floor. I said to Vanessa to hurry and scoop it outside with the racquet in case the bat was just stunned. She said she had whacked it pretty good and thought it was dead.
The next morning we saw the bat was still on the sidewalk and was in fact, dead. It looked smaller with its wings not spread out.
It had paid the price of taking on a girl with a badminton racquet.
