The weather and those horrible throwbacks

August 10, 2010 - Per Peterson

Mother Nature has provided us with all kinds of excitement this summer which, unfortunately, includes some wicked storms that have toppled trees and damaged homes. But all the rainfall and humid weather has also been beneficial to our farmers. Some I have talked to have said this is the best overall crop they’ve seen in years, if not ever. There have been fields here and there that have taken on some hail damage, but overall farmers should be in for a great harvest this fall. Let’s just hope that any future storms don’t include damaging hail — that’s about the only thing that could really hurt this year’s crop.

On a totally unrelated subject, did you catch those uniforms the Twins were sporting last weekend? They were wearing over-sized, navy blue throwback uniforms Saturday, honoring the 1909 St. Paul Gophers in a tribute to the Negro Leagues. One hundred years ago, they were probably trendy. Today, they’re foolish looking, whether the player wearing them is black or white. I’m all for throwbacks and nostalgia, and paying tribute to that 1909 team is a special thing, but let’s not go back too far. The farther back they go the more they risk overdoing it. Besides, real old unis tend to clash with Nike undershirts, Under Armour and aerodynamic batting helmets that look silly even with their current uniforms. Even Twins players admitted they looked ridiculous. If they’re going to turn back time, why not take full advantage of it and throw it back for the fans, too. How about beer and pop for a quarter? How about $1 admission? It's also too bad there isn't a way to make the athletes appreciate and respect the sport they play they way the athletes they honor did so long ago.
