Goodbye 'CCO: First Twins, now Gophers.
March 9, 2011 - Per Peterson
WCCO 830 lost more sports ties this week, as the University of Minnesota announced Gopher broadcasts will leave 'CCO for KFAN and KSTP, all-sports radio stations in the Twin Cities in what appears to be another blow to 'CCO, which lost the Twins a couple years ago. Gophers football has been on WCCO for the last 68 years and basketball and hockey have aired there for at least half of that time. So much for tradition. Chances are pretty good that it came down to financial reasons, but we don't know for sure if 'CCO simply can't afford broadcasting rights because of the economy and a tight budget or if the 'U' just got a too-good-to-refuse offer from KFAN and KSTP. Football games will air on KFAN 1130 and KTLK 100.3 FM beginning this fall. Basketball and hockey will be heard on KSTP 1500. Both contracts are for three years. 'CCO has undergone a lot of changes during the last few years with radio personalities coming and going, but losing the Gophers after saying goodbye to the Twins will really hurt. Who knows, perhaps it's clearing up some money to get the Twins back someday.
