Happy 1st of July!
July 1, 2011 - Karin Elton
It’s time for my annual rant on the phrase Fourth of July. I wonder how and why that surplanted Independence Day. A foreigner coming to the United States would wonder, what happened on the Fourth of July and why is the Fourth of July so special?
Well, it isn’t special. It could be the Fifth of July. Independence Day tells you that this nation unhooked itself from a ruling country. It’s like Cinco de Mayo (May 5) or Syttende Mai (May 17th). What happened on those particular dates?
I think I’m beating a dead horse here because I never see the words Independence Day written (unless I sneak it into a newsbrief). Too many syllables, I guess.
Oh, well, I’ll guess I’ll go along with it and take it a step further in six months. Merry December 25!
