Rising to the occasion

August 4, 2011 - Karin Elton
I’m looking forward to seeing the new movie, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." It has elements that I like: James Franco, monkeys and a certain kind of cheesiness.

The reason I like James Franco goes without saying — if you look at any photo of him you can tell he’s a good actor.

The monkey part harkens back to when I was a kid. I lived in Willmar then and saw a man and woman walking on the sidewalk with a monkey. It was surreal seeing the chimpanzee walk between them like it was a child. Soon after, when I was about to turn 8, I was in a store with my mom and sister and they were going to buy me a birthday present. They said “where do you want to stand until we come back?” I told them I would stand next to this display of stuffed monkeys. My mom had my sister sneak one of the stuffed toys and they bought it without me knowing. It was the best present ever. The monkey wore white tennis shoes and a yellow shirt and red suspenders. I called him ChingChong Jr. I don’t know why.

Also I’ve always been fascinated by the fact that primates and humans are so alike — that we are 96 or 98 percent the same.

So James Franco plus apes equals a good time had by me!
