December 27, 2011 - Karin Elton
It’s nice to know that one can never be too old to be ignorant. I ate dinner over at my daughter’s boyfriend’s house Christmas Eve. The mother is originally from Guatemala and she made tamales.

When I unwrapped the aluminum foil and the banana leaf and forked into the tamale I saw a chicken bone. I thought it was a mistake and politely said nothing, thinking, “oops a stray bone got into mine.”

The next day I mentioned to my other daughter there was a bone in my tamale and she said that was the way it was supposed to be. “She puts a chicken leg in there.”

Next time I see my daughter’s boyfriend’s mother I am going to tell her about me thinking a bone got into my tamale by mistake so we can laugh about it.
