For the love of God, put the phone away and just drive!
May 15, 2012 - Per Peterson
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 5,000 people in the U.S. were killed in crashes involving driver distraction in 2009. Thirty-eight states currently ban texting while driving. This is ridiculous. ALL states should ban texting while driving. Anyone caught texting while behind the wheel, even if it’s at a stoplight, should be fined. How about this: Don't take away a person's license, take away their phone for a week. That'll teach 'em. All states fine people for speeding, they take away their license for drunk driving, why don’t they all punish texters? Leaving the bar drunk and getting behind the wheel is idiotic, but at least the person doing it is drunk and doesn’t know any better (and no, that doesn’t excuse him or her). Trying to pull off a text message while your driving is beyond idiotic. Think about it: You’re driving a car and not looking at the road or holding the wheel (at least not with your hands). People, keep your eyes on the road and don’t guide that 4,000-pound vehicle with your knees. And adults, don’t think it’s just young drivers who think they call pull it off. I have seen plenty of adults, "experienced" drivers, staring straight down at their lap for seconds at a time while driving. Glance (don't stare) at the driver beside you the next time you get a chance and it won’t take long to realize you might be more safe driving through a mine field.
