Salty and sweet a tasty premise, but …

I’m sorry, I just can’t get on board with Burger King’s new bacon sundae. No way. I have nothing against Burger King; I applaud its new menu with fruit smoothies, snack wraps and salads, but bacon and ice cream? Together? Please. No, this is NOT the greatest thing since sliced bread. The new dessert weighs in at more than 500 calories, almost 20 grams of fat and more than 60 grams of sugar. Doesn’t this fly in the face of the chain’s new health-conscious menu? “Yah, I’ll take a salad with fat-free dressing, a glass of ice water and, um, aw what the hell, throw in a bacon sundae!” Never mind the calories and fat — if you’re worried about your waistline just ignore it — how dare a fast-food franchise infringe on such a summer staple by cramming a piece of pork through the frosty goodness of vanilla soft serve. Eating bacon and ice cream together is something you do with your friends at a party when you’re blitzed, not something that should be on the menu of a respected franchise. Bacon is awesome. Ice cream equally so. My mouth is watering just writing this. But I don’t care if opposites are supposed to attract, this is just wrong. Why not take it a step further? If chocolate and peanut butter worked out OK, maybe there’s room in that little sundae cup for a glob of Skippy. If Burger King’s intent was getting our attention, mission accomplished, and I’m sure there are millions out there with their arms spread out and fists in the air screaming, “Finally, bacon and ice cream together!” Not me. I’ll take mine with eggs and some of that sliced bread.
