Samantha Downing, the Intern
May 29, 2013 - Samantha Downing
My name is Samantha Downing and I am ecstatic about this summer internship at the Marshall Independent. Last semester, I had the opportunity to intern at SMSU for Communications with Jim Tate and really enjoyed the experience. At the beginning of my junior year, I didn't have any idea what I would like to pursue as a career. Mrs. Kellen, my career's teacher, thought that I should look at the public relations field, so I gave it a shot. I loved each day of my internship. The best part of this industry is that nothing is ever the same day to day-there is no such thing as set hours. When the opportunity presented itself, I quickly showed interest in this summer internship at the Independent. Journalism and Communications are a bit different, but this allows me to experience a related field. So far, I have been here all of one day, but was kept busy for the eight hours I was working. First, I wrote an introduction about myself that was printed in the paper today. Tomorrow, there will be a preview that I worked on covering the Heart of the Prairie Days in Clarkfield this weekend. I quickly learned how to do over the phone interviews. There is a lot of work that goes into getting the information before you can even write an article. That project took up the majority of my afternoon. At 5:30, I attended the City Council meeting with Deb Gau. I have already learned a lot about the newspaper business, and I am excited to learn more.
