As I have learned, not all stories are handed to the newspaper. Sometimes it does take hard work and a watchful eye to find, what can be, the best article. Per told me on Friday that he has had reporters who just drive around Marshall and surrounding towns to see what jumps out at them. Often times, they have came back empty handed, but on the off-chance they find something, it's gold. I found it interesting someone would even think to do that. Curiosity is an important trait for a good journalist to possess. One thing I really admire about the Independent is that the paper showcases the good of the Marshall community and surrounding area. The people who work here try to find the interesting people and use the paper to promote their cause. It is so fun to be able to be one of the people that search out those stories. One of the main reasons I am interested in this field of work is that you really do get the chance to get a message out, whether it is positive or negative. What the reporters choose to write about is what the readers see.
