"Hotel Hell" comes to Pipestone
August 13, 2014 - Karin Elton
Tears, yelling, mold. That's what Gordon Ramsay encounters at the Calumet Inn in Pipestone. Ramsay, “chef and hospitality expert,” is famous for his angry obscenity-filled rants at beleaguered wanna-be chefs on shows such as “Hell’s Kitchen” and “Kitchen Nightmares.” He and his Fox Television crew traveled to Pipestone last spring for some reason.
Last May, I received an e-mail from the network’s publicity department about the visit. I tried to wrangle an interview with Ramsay or anyone about the filming, but I was told they weren’t doing interviews. They just wanted people to sign up to be hotel customers.
His visit is finally airing Monday at 8 p.m. on Fox according to another e-mail that I received today (Aug. 13) from the pr person.
The e-mail included three clips, titled “The Dungeon,” “Calumet Brawl” and “Is That Mold In There?” From the looks of the clips, it should be a good show. In the first video, Ramsay encounters problems from the get-go. He enters the hotel from the street under a sign that says “entrance.” It is very dark. He has to go back to his car and get a flashlight. Armed with his flashlight, or torch as the Brits say, he opens a door that says “back entrance.”
In the “Calumet Brawl” video, the owners, two “stubborn sisters,” who were given a hotel to run by their father, are looking a little concerned. One staff member is crying, saying the sisters don’t work hard at the hotel. Ramsay says, “If you were my daughters...I’d kick you out.”
Then he is shown his room, “our best room,” as he is told by one of the sisters, and opens up the mini fridge and finds — mold. The room is quaint, to put it Minnesota nicely.
I’m looking forward to watching the episode and see if Ramsay can turn things around for the sisters and the staff.
