How I spent my Friday after Thanksgiving

December 2, 2008 - Cindy Votruba
The only time my brother and I were able to spend any sibling bonding time together this past weekend was the morning and early afternoon of Black Friday.

So what do we do? Go shopping of course!

My brother had jokingly said he wanted to get out at 4 a.m. to see who would be out shopping at that hour (I hoped he was joking). Instead, we set out around 8:15 or so. Sure we may have missed out on the big bargains, but nothing really caught my eye in the ad. Except maybe seasons 1-3 of “House” for $13.98 at Target.

Our first stop was at Target in Oak Park Heights. We drove separately as my brother had to work at Cub (right next to the Target) at 3 p.m. I get there first, head to the electronics, DVDs, etc., spot “House” and nab the last two copies of season one. Victory! Chris, my brother, also got seasons 2 and 3 and I got him season 6 of “Monk.” Time to leave that madhouse.

We went onto Circuit City and Best Buy. A couple of other zoos. Surprisingly I got through the line at Best Buy in like, three minutes (all checkouts were in use, along with the service desk).

We then made our way to my favorite store, Half Price Books. It’s a great place to pick up clearance books and CDs, along with the books for half price (I usually stick with clearance). This time I only spent less than $16, compared to the more than $50 I spent the last time I was there.

We also went to Savers where I found a cool shirt for $2.50 (yea half-off on yellow tag items!) and then to eat at Noodles and Company. Noodles and Co. may only have like 10 to 12 noodle items on the menu, but it’s really good for semi-fast food pasta. I had an Indonesian peanut stir-fry with lime. It did burn my tongue a little and I had to suck down my Coke, but oh my goodness, it’s so good!

Then we hit the mall. Ugh. We looked around Kohl’s at first, but when I saw the line to check out wrap around a corner and then some, I knew I wasn’t going to even bother picking anything up. But I did spent some quality time at Ragstock (a somewhat new store at Maplewood Mall). Found an irregular sweatshirt (nothing really major wrong with it) and a winter hat. Looked at Bath and Body Works (another favorite store of mine, I have enough products from there to start my own B&B kiosk), but didn’t buy anything.

My other big purchase at the mall? A cinnamon roll from Cinnabon (my indulgence for the day).
