If it looks like an idiot …
February 8, 2009 - Per Peterson
Just wanted to take my hat off to Ottawa County (Ohio) Sheriff Bob Bratton for telling it like it is after more than 130 people were rescued when a huge ice floe broke away from the Lake Erie shoreline Saturday, trapping anglers for as long as four hours. Here’s what he said: ‘‘What happened here today was just idiotic. I don’t know how else to put it.’’ Kind of harsh, sure, but it was well said. And it's true. Stupid people should be called out for stupid things they do, and there very well could’ve easily been dozens of deaths. We usually don’t hear public officials calling out their citizens like that. Usually, all we end up getting is politically-correct speak coming from behind a podium — boring, prepared rhetoric that's barely quoteable. Public officials like to play it close to the vest when speaking to the media; they don’t want to upset anyone or make a bad situation worse, and that’s understandable. But this guy obviously calls it like he sees it and he’s not necessarily interested in protecting anyone.
