Trying out a new recipe

March 24, 2009 - Cindy Votruba
Last week, I decided to try a new recipe for sloppy joes. Several years ago, I had bought the Plum Creek Library System’s cookbook in which patrons shared recipes for all kinds of food. I had submitted my recipe for banana bread, but whatever company put together the book couldn’t read my writing, so my last name was extremely misspelled, plus I was lumped together with another patron, as apparently the recipe was similar (it wasn’t).

Anyway, back to the sloppy joes. I had less than half an hour to make dinner. The recipe called for hamburger, a half cup of onions, a tablespoon of ketchup, a tablespoon of mustard, salt, pepper and a 10-ounce can of chicken gumbo soup. It looked relatively easy. You brown the hamburger and onion together, add the other ingredients and let it simmer. Then you can serve it on buns or over rice. The gumbo and mustard added a little to the hamburger I think. Definitely have to make it again.

And of course, I should try out more recipes from my library cookbook!
