Food and fun

On Saturday afternoon, I got to spend some time with a group of Balaton residents who get together a few times every year to eat foods from other countries.

What they do is have a planning session, select a country and then find recipes for appetizers, soups, salads, a main course and a dessert. Then a few of the members more or less take over a kitchen to prepare and cook the food.

The menu featured Middle Eastern fare. The women in the kitchen were busily rolling out lamb meat for the gyros, cutting up green beans for a salad, making pita bread and gettng out feta cheese for an appetizer. Soon, tantilzing smells came from the kitchen. More guests came. Pretty soon the house was filled with not only a heady aroma from the food, but laughter intermingled with the conversation.

This group calls themselves the “Good Eating” club. It’s gotten so big that it’s divided into two smaller groups. One meets Friday night and the other meets the following night. Both have the same menu, but different people make the meals. Shirley Wendland of Balaton actually got invited to both nights this past weekend, so she got to enjoy the food twice.

I’ll have to get the recipe for the wild rice and green bean salad.
