Working with Wii
April 6, 2009 - Cindy Votruba
The first and mind you, only time I’ve played the Wii, I didn’t do that great. I wouldn’t release the button fast enough when bowling, I’d hit the ball too hard or too soft in golf, and I couldn’t for the life of me match up “Mes.”
This afternoon, I watched a couple of residents from Morningside Heights play the Wii for the first time. They were having about the same luck as I was, and they’ve never played a video game before in their life. I had at least some experience with the Atari back in the 1980s and some Ninetendo, but I never really got hardcore. But the two women enjoyed themselves, even said they’ll play it again.
Then I somehow got involved in a couple rounds of the card game “toss back” with the residents. Each resident gets six cards and the tossback “caller” flips up cards and calls them off (jack of hearts, 10 of spades, etc.). If your card is called, you push it in the middle. If you manage to get all six cards called, you say “tossback” and win a nickel. On Thursdays, it’s a dime.
I was glad to learn a new game. At least I don’t have to work a controller!
