Macie's back in town

April 19, 2009 - Per Peterson
It was good to see Macie Michelson back in Marshall on Saturday. Michelson, who starred for the Tiger girl’s basketball team, is now a guard for the South Dakota State University women’s basketball team. You might have caught her on ESPN in March, as SDSU made it into the NCAA Women’s Division I Basketball Tournament. The Jackrabbits won their first game before bowing out against Baylor in a two-point heartbreaker. This past weekend, Michelson could be seen — of course, on the basketball court as one of the referees for a Pacesetters basketball tournament that featured teams from Marshall, Tracy, Minneota, Willmar, Yellow Medicine East, Dassel-Cokato and Redwood Valley. Michelson, a 5-foot-6 sophomore, was a key player for SDSU (32-3) this past season, averaging nearly 6 points per game in just under 21 minutes. She was also third on the team in assists. Former Worthington standout Maria Boever (junior forward) is also in the team. She averaged 10 points per game. It’s a pretty good bet these former area athletes will get even more playing time next season. It’s also a good bet the Jackrabbits haven’t played their last game on national (or at least, regional) TV.
