And the barbershop groupie adventures continue....

This past Saturday, I went to the West Contral Connection Chorus’ spring shows, mainly to support my boyfriend, Ross (yes, I’ll finally admit he’s more than just my friend) and to check out what these once-a-year shows are all about.

The West Central Connection is a regional barbershop chorus with members from Willmar, Atwater, Benson, Echo, Wood Lake, Marshall and a few other communities. Now before I started going out with Ross, the most I’ve been exposed to barbershop is checking out the Song of the Prairie Chorus’ practice and going to its first-ever show a couple of years ago. Sure, the songs may be a little old-fashioned at times, but there are several somewhat current songs that I’ve heard done in the barbershop style. The guest artist for the concert, OC Times (who just happens to be the reigning International Barbershop Quartet champion), performed a number “I Want to Grow Old With You” that comes from the movie “The Wedding Singer” (it’s the one that Robby Hart performs to Julia in the airplane).

I went into the concert thinking, “oh, I’m not sure I really will like OC Times.” Sure they may be young, and sure the members are “cute,” but I was a little skeptical. Once they started singing, I really enjoyed them. Barbershop does take a little getting used to, I’ll admit. But it’s slowly becoming a favorite of mine.
