Bats in the Belfry

July 17, 2009 - Karin Elton
Emmy Award nominations were announced Thursday, and Minnesotan Jessica Lange received a nomination for ‘‘Grey Gardens,’’ said The Associated Press. Lange heard the news early Thursday morning: ‘‘I was awake already and I had forgotten that this was the morning,’’ Lange said. ‘‘I’m way up north at my cabin in the woods in northern Minnesota. And I thought it was somebody calling to talk to me about my bat problem here in the cabin. So I was very relieved and it was an unanticipated bit of joyful information.’’

Besides being funny that Lange gets a call about being nominated for an Emmy and she thinks the call is about her bat problem, it’s ironic because the role is about someone who was batty.

‘‘Grey Gardens,’’ is about two of Jackie Kennedy Onassis’ eccentric relatives. They were rich, so they are called “eccentric,” but they lived in a filthy house and got odder and odder as they got older and older.
