Fun at the fair

August 7, 2009 - Cindy Votruba
I was never in 4H as a kid, but there are days I wish I was. I remember seeing the projects my cousins did for the Barron (Wis.) county fair and thinking, that would be cool. There’s so many different categories a kid can enter for their projects, anything from buying clothes to complete an outfit to making a quilt to taking photographs. One of the kids I interviewed on Wednesday said you try to find the item on sale for the “Clothes You Wear” category. I’m big on finding stuff on clearance or sale, I could do that. You don’t have to be the most artistically inclined kid to enter something in the fair. It can be as simple as finding a tasty recipe or researching some topic.

I’ve entered a few things in the open class exhibit the last few years, just some photos and scrapbook pages. I’ve gotten a couple of little sticker ribbons for my efforts. Guess that’s as close as I’ll be to being an actual 4Her.

It’s fun hitting the dusty trails through the midway, getting to hold little kittens in the FFA children’s barnyard, having a chocolate malt or listening to a local group play music on the free stage.

Everybody has their own reason for going to the county fair, whether it’s for the rodeo, the demo derby, the rides (by the way, new midway this year, check it out!) or the 4H exhibits. What’s mine besides telling some of the stories this year? Probably a little of everything. I just have to get that chocolate malt.
