During the Lyon County Fair, I was going to blog about Cat Raven, but I forgot. Now that I’ve remembered, here goes. Cat Raven and her boyfriend/babydaddy came into the Independent one day a couple years ago to suggest that a reporter write a story about her.
She said she was a singer and had a goal to perform at all the county fairs in Minnesota. I think she was from Wisconsin. She was very pregnant, beautiful, and wearing bib overalls and a tube top.
Her only compensation that she was asking for was a bottle of water for when she was onstage. She was traveling in an old car with a trailer and two huge dogs. She and her beau had no money. My then fellow reporter, Rae Kruger, and I were concerned about her advanced pregnancy. It seemed that any money she had was going to the dogs and for gas. Cat said she asked for benevolent societies to help her out as she went from city to city.
She said she was looking for an “angel.” A benefactor who would subsidize her career in the hopes that she would hit it big and then pay the angel back, I guess.
Rae and I were fascinated with her and went to the Lyon County Fair at the time she was scheduled to perform to see if she could sing or not. We spotted her and her boyfriend at the fair. She was eating french fries.
She didn’t perform. We saw her pack her stuff in their old car and leave in a huff.
We asked the fairboard people why didn’t she perform and they said she complained about the inferior conditions — the sound system on the free stage wasn’t up to par.
I googled her to find out more about her but got nothing. Darn! I would have liked to know what happened to her. Hopefully she gave up the baby for adoption to a stable family.
Maybe someday I’ll find out whatever happened to Cat Raven.
