You only live once

September 18, 2009 - Cindy Votruba
I’m going to admit I’m jealous of a friend of mine from high school. I lost touch with her back in 1993 when she was studying abroad through St. Olaf College. Thanks to Facebook, I’ve managed to reconnect with her as she was working in South Korea teaching English. She did that for more than a year and finished her contract last month.

Last week, she got back from spending two weeks in Japan on a side trip. She also had the chance to travel to China. Granted, she said, she’s had to dip quite a bit into her savings, but wow, imagine having the freedom to go to these places. And she doesn’t mind traveling by herself. She says I should take the chance sometime. Just pick a destination and go there. And don’t bring anyone along. She suggested Montreal (or was it Toronto?). Canada would be relatively easy to get around. Maybe someday....

Earlier this week she told me she has a possible job lined up in New York City, again teaching English to immigrants and foreign businesspeople at a private school. She learned about it from a friend of hers. Before this opportunity, she wasn’t sure what she was going to be doing. She was going to stay with her mom in Wisconsin for a few months before taking on another teaching job, perhaps in Turkey. But she decided to nab the NYC job. Why not? You only live once.
