Gophers are bowl eligible!!!
November 15, 2009 - Per Peterson
The University of Minnesota football team is bowl-eligible. This is thanks to a 13-10 win over Division II South Dakota State University on Saturday in a game that, well, if you missed it and you’re a Gopher fan, you really didn’t miss much. The Gophers didn’t score an offensive touchdown. They’re only TD came on an SDSU fumble near their goal line. Take that play away and they lose 10-6. Ugh. But a win’s a win, I suppose and the Gophers will now play in a bowl game — a mid- to low-level bowl game (barring a win at Iowa next weekend) meaning this program really has made no significant steps during the last five years. This is still a pitiful team — not because they barely beat a team from Division II, but because they proved again this year that no matter how much their coach tries to sell us on how great they will be, they’re athletes don’t stack up against other across the country. They recruit big athletes, just not the biggest ones. They recruit fast athletes, just not the fastest ones. Give Brewster another year or two to prove himself and his recruiting acumen, but if this team doesn’t finish in the top three or four in the Big Ten sometime in the next couple of years, it’s time to look in a different direction. Congratulations to SDSU for putting up a great fight against a “superior team,” and congrats Gophers for not totally embarrassing yourselves by losing. Bring on USC!
