A vow to lighten up for Christmas

This week’s online poll asks if people will spend less this year on Christmas gifts. Seventy percent said they would. It would be interesting to see if people really did buy fewer and less costly presents. It’s hard not to get caught up in the spending. People have expectations — especially children.
Whoever thought of giving gifts to each other to celebrate Christ’s birthday anyhow? It would be better if everyone volunteered that day or gave to the poorer. Charity is part of the Muslims’ Ramadan celebration.
Having to come up with extra money to buy presents is a big anxiety for me and I haven't been cheerful about the holiday season in a long time. This year I’m going to try to enjoy the Christmas lights and decorating our house.
Now if I can get my kids to look at the pretty lights instead of the pretty packages....
