A few thoughts
December 14, 2009 - Cindy Votruba
Being on vacation has put me a little behind on my blogging. I was thinking about doing one from my laptop at home, but I wasn’t that ambitious. So I’m doing one from thoughts I had during the week.
Last Saturday, the 5th, Ross and I were coming back from Minneota High School’s production of “Grease.” We were listening to Radio Heartland on Minnesota Public Radio when the channel was playing a cool, folksy song sung by a woman with a guitar. I’m a big fan of guitar-playing singer-songwriters, seems like mainly women, such as Alice Peacock, Susan Tedeschi, Lucinda Williams, etc. Then the host announced the name, Vicky Emerson. Wait, that sounds familiar. But isn’t she a piano player? I had interviewed Emerson a couple or so years ago when she was performing a free concert close to the New Year’s holiday at Jackpot Junction. She’s originally from Elmwood, Wis. Apparently she’s taken up guitar and recently put out a new album, “The Long Road Home.” It sounds great. And I knew her when...
Once we got into Marshall, Ross and I went to Shay’s for karaoke. The Independent just did a story on the renovations at Shay’s, and yes, it is a great improvement. Star Entertainment, a karaoke biz from Westbrook, hosts every other weekend at Shay’s, and that weekend was the start of a karaoke contest. Ross signed up, along with a couple of others from our group, Jim and Carrie. And get this, Jim, Ross and Carrie got first, second and third place that night. Since the top two move onto the finals, it looks like Jim and Ross have to start doing a little practicing. Don’t ask me what the prize is, but it also looks like I’m going to Shay’s again in the near future.
