I'm scared
Thu, November 20, 2008 @ 2:09PM
If I were the men in my family, I would hightail it out of Dodge this weekend, even if I had to set up a tent under a bridge somewhere. My daughters want to invite five or six friends to a sleepover Saturday. I’m thinking part of the evening could be spent going to see the new movie, “Twilight.” I want to see that movie too. I wonder if they’ll let me go if I sit in a corner and be quiet. If I went, I’d be quiet, unless they weren’t. I would then crawl on my belly, slither up to where they were sitting and hiss, “shut up!” then crawl back guerilla style to my seat. I could then relax and enter a world where vampires leap around on trees and then go to prom. A frightening movie perhaps, but not as scary as seven or eight 13-year-old girls at your house.

Some scary stuff
Thu, November 20, 2008 @ 9:19AM
If you haven't yet read the story on Pam Stenzel's presentation in today's paper, do so Stenzel shared some scary stuff on the rate of sexually transmitted diseases in high schoolers. But when you read it, you many disagree with some of Stenzel's broaders statements, as I did. Remeber, Stenzel isn't the only expert who knows about teen and young adult sex who is willing to share their opinions on it. One out of four students have an STD, Stenzel said. “Sixty-four percent of teenagers in Marshall who have had sex are already infected with HPV,” Stenzel said. “One out of five people over 12 in the U.S. is infected with herpes,” she said, “and you can’t get rid of herpes.” In her apparently rapid fire manner, Stenzel advocates abstinence and disagrees with abortion. OK. But those are big topics and before anyone makes a decision on either topic, they ought to do more than just listen to Stenzel.

Count the ballots already
Sun, November 16, 2008 @ 6:23PM
Gov. Tim Pawlenty told the nation Sunday he’s confident the recount in Minnesota’s Senate race will be fair. Pawlenty appeared Sunday on ‘‘Fox News Sunday’’ and was asked about the race between Republican Sen. Norm Coleman and Democrat Al Franken — a race Coleman leads by 206 votes ahead of a recount that’s set to begin Wednesday. Isn’t that comforting? Geesh, I hope it would be fair. I would also have hoped the governor of Minnesota wouldn’t feel the need to remind us that it WILL be a fair recount. Then again, in this contentious race, nothing should surprise us. Sorry folks, the election season is not over yet, and it won’t be over for, what another four, five six weeks? To the state of Minnesota, the secretary of state, or whoever sets rules and guides for recounts, I think I speak for a lot of people when I say: Just count the damn votes already.

I Wanna Be A Rock Star
Thu, November 20, 2008 @ 3:51PM
This past weekend, I tried Guitar Hero 3 for the first time in my life. In fact, it was probably the first time I’ve played a video game since my brother’s old Ninetendo 64 and I played a round of Duck Hunt or Mario (the games that came with the system). Before that, it was the Atari 2600. I was pretty adept at age 10, making it through the 20-minute time limit of Pitfall and getting a pretty decent score on video pinball. But to tell you the truth, I never really kept up with video games since then. Must be the bad hand-eye coordination. Anyways, back to Guitar Hero 3. My friend (whose system it was) had me go through the tutorial and try to get used to where to place my fingers on the buttons of the plastic guitar’s fret. I did OK (maybe not that great). We decided to do a cooperative song, “Barricuda” by Heart. I chose a character, which looked like a purple-haired anime girl.

Welcome to the New Xbox Experience
Wed, November 19, 2008 @ 3:17PM
Microsoft unleashed its New Xbox Experience this morning, around 4 a.m. central time. The changes are pretty significant, adding functionality like Netflix streaming playback, installing a game on the hard drive and bringing in cute little cartoon representations of each gamer. In an effort to make its set top game console more appealing to the masses, Microsoft re-envisioned its Xbox 360 operating system. Calling it the Xbox Experience, Microsoft re-thought the way its customers used the now three year old system and realized the old way was cramped. Much of what users could access on the console, including game downloads, videos, music, streaming content for a PC, was becoming difficult to navigate and ultimately broken. I didn’t wake up early just to download the new experience (really, honestly I just happened to wake up at 5 a.m., two hours before my alarm was set). Since I was awake I decided to give the new system a spin.
