ALEXANDRIA— The Marshall Tiger volleyball team opened up the 2014 season with a road sweep over the Alexandria on Tuesday night. The Tigers opened the match by winning the first set 25-12. Alexandria fought back in the second and third sets, but the Tigers managed to win them both, prevailing 25-23 and and 28-26 respectively. Marshall coach Dan Westby knew Alexandria picked up their game over the final two sets. “Alex really controlled the pace of play in the second and third set,” Westby said. “They were really aggressive and I thought that was the difference. Luckily we were able to fight our way back and win the last two. Going into the match Westby wanted his players to focus on taking care of the ball and he felt his team did a good job of that and that they were able to get a lot of players involved. Callie Graff paced the Tigers offensively with 10 kills to go with six from Lexie Saugstad and five from Marah Mulso. Mulso also led the team in blocks with three to go with two each from Callie Graff, Lexie Saugstad and Jackie Petrich. Gabby Hess led Marshall in digs with 14 while Saugstad had Haley Bennett finished with 10. Saugstad tallied three aces to go with two from Graff. Looking Ahead: Marshall will have another tough test on Thursday as it travels to Bethlehem Academy– the top-ranked school in Class A. Westby acknowledged they are going to have to make some improvements and continue to do the things they did well against Alexandria in order to come out with the win. “Going and playing in their place is always tough,” Westby said. “They are a very good passing team and do a great job of taking care of the ball. We’re going to have to match them in that regard if we want to have a chance.”
