A revision offered to letter writer’s ‘flawed’ reasoning

June 7, 2013

To the editor: On May 21, 2013, Alex MacArthur wrote a letter to the editor attempting to point out the hypocrisies of liberal thinking in light of the recent same sex marriage support in Minnesota....

You are not drawing a logical conclusion.

I offered a distinction or clarification to the rationale - only those who kill, can be killed. I am not asking for equal treatment - never have. I'm simply contorting the SSM argument of equality and am not getting a response.

I'm asking SSM proponents to offer rationale for not extending the same rights to others. They (and you)offer none. Please provide me with a reason or distinction for limiting marriage rights to only two concenting adults that are unrelated.

Killing is killing, 56258. You can't justify one form of killing and not the other. You claim that recognizing SSM legitimizes "marriage" of anything and everything but killing someone is acceptable in some cases but not others. If I'm not mistaken, I believe that fits the definition of a hypocrite.

Hartman75, you are incorrect. I believe that if someone knowing & intentionally kills another human (defined circumstances), they may lose their right to live via a trial and court of law. An aborted child is never an intentional, knowing killer and is never given a voice (investigation, trial, jury, etc.).

56258 & WW07, must agree with the premise of Sam's letter. He argues that IF you oppose abortion, then logically, you must also oppose ALL killing. No matter whether the killing punishes criminals (capital punishment) or the killing involves animals. Killing is killing. It can't be acceptable to kill animals, criminals or ANY living creature unless you believe abortion is acceptable. It must make perfect sense to both 56258 and WW07 since that's the same logic used by those who oppose SSM.

Silence on the line. SSM supporters have nothing to say when others ask to use their logic and cries for support to extend marriage and sexual preference forward.

That letter is one perfect illustration of progressive prattle.

I gave up after the 30th set of parentheses. I would rather our country focus on mass shootings of innocent people than restricting the right of marriage for two people. How can some stand for the "right" of everyone to own a weapon designed to kill numerous humans, yet feel threatened by ssm?

"There was nothing wrong with the original letter..."

In that case rangeral, you must then agree with the allegations Sam Collette presents in his letter.

There was nothing wrong with the original letter, hartman. As usual, you like to make things up to support your convoluted point of view.

Write your own letter.

Great letter Sam. Your “revised” letter clearly points out the fallacies used by conservatives in their argument against same-sex marriage. Presumably one responder also believes that the argument supporting same-sex marriage works if you take out the line about polygamy. But then it appears they were not real clear on the rationale of your letter.

Hey Sam - I presume you support SSM marriage, correct? If so, is there any circumstance in which you would deny a consenting adult to marry another consenting adult? If so, why?

I don't see what the big earth-shaking revelation is here. Take out the line about animals, and it pretty much works. A life(human, not animal) is a life. It should be protected. A marriage is a marriage, it should be protected also.

I just saw a commercial with Norma McCorvey yesterday. She was the "Roe" in Roe vs Wade. I didn't realize that the woman associated with the legalization of abortion never had an abortion. Something to think read and think about! I'll let everyone else go from here. May God forgive us all.
