Marshall School District discusses strategic plan

MARSHALL —Marshall School Board members, student representatives, principals and other personnel gathered together in small groups to discuss the district’s “Vision ‘16 — A Plan for the Future”......

Try this strategic plan: educate potential and current parents about the importance of reading and talking with their kids when they are babies and toddlers. Remind them that kids will follow your example, whether it's reading or sitting glued to the tv with a beer or can of pop. Teach parents that every day offers opportunities to teach children skills and knowledge from math to geography. Teach parents that it may take only about 2 hours a day to raise a healthy dog (feed, exercise and play with it) but a lot more time, money and commitment to raise a kid. Teach parents that they are responsible for readying their children for learning by feeding them, making sure they are rested and aware of their jobs as respectful, engaged learners. Teach parents that they may not wish to be parents if that choice seems so overwhelming because it is overwhelming and not for everyone. Teach adults to distinguish between choosing to create a child and having recreational physical activity.

So, teach parents how to parent? Sounds familiar. The family dynamic is broken, and has been for decades. Unfortunately, parents are too tired from trying to get ahead at their job to do their real job. There's another issue with babies having babies, and the list goes on...

As for the article, it is nothing more than another load of fertilizer. I wonder how much time is spent dreaming up all this bs, (especially the acronym), and then try to pass it off as a ground breaking ahcievement. Truth is, even if this grant is obtained (should be done by Willert, not some other guy), we're not going to notice much of a change in anything. The school will get more money though, and that keeps them happy, for a little while.

Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, has a clue as to what is wrong with educational system, much less how to fix it. This certainly includes the state and federal governments.

The crap in this article sure sounds like they're trying to do something, but they're just going in circles. So the big revelation is that standardization isn't good. Wow, how come nobody ever realized that before? So now we shift away from that, and take off in a new direction, only that direction will be something that we tried before and was discarded. Around and round we go...

Truth is, parents care less about how their schools are doing than how the football/basketball teams are doing. Kids are attending school to pass time until they go to practice, or even worse, their job. Helicoptering parents are doing everything they can to save their children from experiencing failure, and growing from it. And finally, administrators are much more concerned about keeping their big paying job, than educating our children. They plan these meetings and teams with the hopes of impressing our state and federal leaders into giving them the grant money.

Just a little cynical farmkid? You seem to know everything that's wrong with our education system, so what ideas do you have to improve student learning?

I like what I'm hearing from those who have the ability to institute change within our local education system. Creating the support to put those ideas into practice is another matter. Personally, I don't believe our society places enough importance or value on education. If we did, teachers would be earning millions per year, not athletes and CEO's.

Marshall ISD does not practice what it preaches. The cores values Mr Willert refers to are smoke in mirrors. Student centered excellence, ethical responsibility for the students, and embracing partnerships HA! Practice what you preach otherwise they are just words on paper. As a parent I don't want this district parenting my kids! I would just like them to educate them!

Sounds like someone is having a flashback to the 60s & 70s. How about open classrooms, optional attendance, no oppressive grading systems, or maybe just pass/fail. Don't let the man get you down Principal Jones. No matter what your job, unless you own the company, someone is going to monitor your effectiveness and give you direction. The comparison to an iPhone is interesting. The ability to organize your phone is celebrated while the maniacal mandate that screen layout, icons, user interface and all apps conform to rigid standards that insure user success is left out. Without a solid base the rest is fluff. A number of writers are right on. Parents, teach your children well.

It seems some districts, and administrators, are constantly coming up with a better way to teach, a new plan, a new calendar, new tests, and new ideas. Then they can say, "look at my new plan".

And some districts just get the job done.

It seems Mr. Clint is one of the former.
