One other thing to remember about what happened in 2010 was that one day before the convention, Sarah Palin publicly endorsed Emmer, pretty much declaring him the more conservative of the two (Emmer and Seifert). The equivalent of that this time probably would be if the Tea Party/extreme right would bring in Ted Cruz to endorse someone else. So watch for Seifert perhaps to cozy up to Minnesota's Cruz allies. That's as much a strategy as watching which demographic "tiles" he's got lined up.
