I think the statue, landscaping plan and signage is a great idea. Since private funds will be used it will not negatively impact the University’s budget and the project has the potential to benefit recruitment of new students and faculty. It’s a win-win for the school and community.

Nothing wrong with people in Marshall making an effort to improve things.

However, this is poor planning/timing with the financial crunch the university is in.

I wonder what the chances are that this thing get started, run out of funds (as is the norm), and then the university is asked to cover the remainder.

Anything that ever "was" eye pleasing in Marshall has already been torn down and replaced by a parking lot, tin shack or cheesy strip mall. If it's eye pleasing that you want you should move to New Ulm or Northfield.

With the financial situation SMSU is in, one would think that the Foundation and it's leadership would do more to keep programs, attract and keep students instead of this. I do however think that the proposal is good. But timing is bad.

The college is millions in the red, and they want to raise $200,000 to make a new entrance? Yep, the university has straightened itself right out.
