Shootings leave Somalis fearful of gang activity

August 31, 2013
Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The fatal shootings of three young men this summer has some Somalis worried that gang activity is picking up among young people in the community.

Two men were killed in Minneapolis and one was killed in Burnsville.

The Star Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/18tBhFw ) the deaths have marked the worst string of violence among Somalis since a string of gang-related killings in 2008.

Police in Minneapolis and Burnsville wouldn't comment about the shootings to the newspaper. But several in the Somali community believe there is cause for concern.

The three victims were well known among other Somali youth. Abdul Mohamed is a youth worker with Ka Joog, a Somali outreach organization. He says his group is planning an upcoming event to address the violence.
