Allina drops celebrated birthing option

April 24, 2014

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Allina Health has pulled the drain plug on a celebrated birthing option at its 11 Minnesota hospitals and the Mother Baby Center in Minneapolis.

Allina says it will no longer offer water births because of new guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

When Allina opened the $50 million Minneapolis center last year, it was hailed as a place to support every birthing style. Now expectant parents are scrambling to find new places to accommodate a water birth. Tara Rajdi tells the Star Tribune (http://strib.mn/1f6Pv92 ) Allina is taking away her choice on how she wants to bring her baby into the world.

An underwater birth has long been thought to reduce labor pains. The academy recently cited safety concerns, including a newborn aspirating water, in recommending that the births be done only in research studies.
