Congratulations to the No. 7 ranked Southwest Minnesota State volleyball team received the No. 2 seed in the Central Region and will meet No. 7 seeded Metro State (Colo.) in the first round of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament beginning today at 2:30 p.m. on the campus of Concordia College (St. Paul, MN).
With two regular season wins over Mary and Northern State, the Mustangs finished the regular season with a 27-5 record and 16-4 mark in the NSIC finishing in second place. The Mustangs are no strangers to the postseason, having qualified for the NCAA tournament the past four years.
While the Mustangs haven't played the Roadrunners in two decades, they have played a few teams that met up with MSC this season. The Roadrunners defeated three teams SMSU also beat in Colorado-Colorado Springs, Mesa State (Colo.) and Adams State (Colo.), but they lost to Augustana 3-2 back in September. Good luck to Coach Culhane and the Mustang Volleyball team has they head into NCAA Tournament competition.

SMSU Coach's Forum at Mike's Cafe
I have had a number of requests from the crew at Mike's Caf for Tim Steinbach, Associate Head Football Coach and Defensive Coordinator, to come in and provide the early morning group a little "chalk and talk" session. So, I have arranged for Tim to join the group this morning at 6 a.m. to answer questions and go over the SMSU Mustang Football defensive philosophy.
For example, a number of regulars want to know, why do we run five or six defensive players in on certain downs and distances? I, of course, have given them my answer, but that just does not seem to be good enough. Who better to answer a question of that nature than the coach that makes those decisions. I encourage everyone who reads the newspaper early in the morning to come over to Mike's and be entertained.
Coach Steinbach has a few stories about the season he will share, a full menu of defensive knowledge, and a picture of a standout men's basketball alum who is no stranger to Mike's. I look forward to giving you the review of our first SMSU Coach's Forum at Mike's Caf in next week's hoofprints article.
Congratulations, Tyler Bowen, for providing the correct answer to last week's Mustang Hoofprint's Trivia Question: Who is the all-time leading rebounder for the Mustang Men's Basketball team? Tyler gave the correct answer of Frank Belmont who ended his career at SMSU with 848 rebounds. Thank you to all who submitted answers to last week's trivia question.
HOOFPRINTS TRIVIA QUESTIONS:
Who was the first SMSU women's basketball player to score 1,000 career points?
The first person to e-mail me at MustangHoofPrints@SouthwestMSU.edu with the correct answer to this question will receive a SMSU mustangs.com T-shirt. Please include your first and last name and phone number with the correct answer. The winner will be announced on The Saturday Morning Mustang Show between 9-10 a.m. on 1400AM each week.
