Hoofprints

February 12, 2009
By Chris Hmielewski

Each week, the excitement mounts for SMSU men's basketball fans as the Mustangs continue their success in the NSIC (1st Place), Central Region (Ranked 1st), and in the NABC/Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll (ranked 24th).

Head coach, Greg Stemen, indicated at the beginning of the year, when ranked 18th in the first national poll, the team that was in this spot last year at this time, never made it back into the polls the rest of the season. Coach Stemen, the staff and our players have battled a tough NSIC schedule earning their way back into the national poll and holding down the top spot in the NSIC.

It is a great weekend for home events on the campus of SMSU. The Mustang men's and women's basketball teams play host to St. Cloud State on Friday and Concordia St. Paul on Saturday with the women's action at 6 p.m. and the men's at 8 p.m. in the R/A Facility.

Mustang Wrestling hits the mat on Saturday afternoon as they host Minnesota State Moorhead in the PE Gym at 3 p.m. It is a great weekend to bring the family out to the campus of SMSU and experience Mustang Athletics. Below is a listing of our upcoming special events for the Athletic Department and Mustang Booster Club.

On Friday, Feb. 13, there will be a "Mustang Post-Game Social" at the Hitching Post for all Mustang Booster Club members and basketball parents. The social, beginning at approximately 9:30 p.m., with appetizers available for booster members and parents.

The SMSU athletics department is hosting the 2009 WBCA Pink Zone to raise breast cancer awareness on Feb. 13 at the SMSU. SMSU will host a reception for cancer survivors between games, give away prizes and have a silent auction.

Wiersma, a former SMSU men's basketball player, died in a car accident last July. Please celebrate Wiersma's life with us at the games.
