Hoofprints

April 22, 2009
By Chris Hmielewski

The academic year is flying by and we are less than three weeks from graduation at SMSU. The spring sports are in the final stages of their seasons and all of our teams this spring have put themselves in position to qualify for NSIC Tournament and NCAA Regional play. It is an exciting time of year for Mustang Athletics.

The SMSU Softball team will host doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. This weekend will start off with a doubleheader on Saturday against Winona State at 12 p.m. and on Sunday against Upper Iowa also at 12 p.m. The Mustang's head into the weekend 25-17 overall and on top of the NSIC with a 17-3 record.

The Mustang Baseball team will be at home Saturday as well playing host to Augustana College at 1 p.m. at Alumni Field. The Mustangs are 20-6 overall with a 10-6 record in the NSIC holding down fourth place entering this weekend.

The SMSU Women's Tennis team will have the No. 7 seed for the upcoming NSIC Women's Tennis Championship on April 25 -26 at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn. The Mustangs will play No. 2 seed Upper Iowa on Saturday, April 25 at 10:30 a.m.

The top eight teams in the final NSIC standings made the tournament. The tournament is a dual format with three doubles and six singles matches. A full eight-team draw will be played out to completion. When a team has clinched a dual match victory, remaining matches will be pulled.

SMSU (6-12, 5-6 NSIC) still has one regular season match remaining as the Mustangs will play a non-conference contest with Sioux Falls (S.D.) on Wednesday at 4 pm.

The SMSU Women's Golf team will compete in the NSIC Spring Championship this Saturday and Sunday at the Brookings Country Club in Brookings, SD. Saturday start time is at 11 a.m. and Sunday the golfers will tee off at 9:30 a.m. The Mustangs enter the weekend No. 10 in the region and need a strong showing to qualify for the regional in Sioux Falls, SD next weekend.

Good luck to all of our spring sports teams this weekend!
