MARSHALL - At Hill Street Place, new housing manager Susie Sammons wants to promote "the active adult."

Sammons started her duties as Hill Street's housing manager on May 19. She said she takes care of tenant services, the rental of the units and facility needs.

That includes adding some new activities, plus a few renovations to the building.

Hill Street Place Housing manager Susie Sammons hands out cake to residents Friday as part of the July birthday celebration.

Sammons said living in the community all her life and her previous job experience helped her ease into her new position.

"I'm a Marshall native, which really helps," Sammons said. "I worked with rental properties most of my life."

She also knew several of the Hill Street residents before she took on the job.

"I have a lot of connections with a lot of them just from being in the area for so long," Sammons said.

Sammons said her degree in education is also coming in handy.

"That helps with the organizing of activities and planning," Sammons said.

She's also getting to know the residents' families as well.

"I feel really lucky I get to do this job," Sammons said. "We have a great staff, the tenant services coordinator Gail (Perrizo) is fantastic, and the two housekeepers and two maintenance workers. They all have been great to work with."

Sammons said there have been some "fun" challenges with her job, which includes improvements to the building.

"We are doing some updates to the apartments," Sammons said. "We plan to add to our fitness room."

Sammons said there's plans to get more exercise programs at Hill Street and bringing in speakers for more interactive discussions.

"I really want to market the active adult," Sammons said. '(Hill Street) has been here for 22 years, excellent service in a beautiful facility and I just can't wait to show it to people."

There's also other activities in the works, Sammons said.

"We've got raised garden plots," Sammons said. "We're doing more outings in the community. We hope to add an activity room, to do more crafts."

Residents said Sammons is fitting in well at Hill Street.

"She's got personality-plus, always smiling," said Hill Street resident Laura Doty.

"I like her," said resident Margaret Chaput.

"She's got lots of energy," said Lucille Varpness.
