What Must I Do To Be Saved? for Sept. 25

September 25, 2009
By Jim Anderson

The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. I Corinthians 15:56-57

Each week we are going through the entire New Testament of the Bible, from Matthew to Revelation, stopping at each verse that tells us how we might gain eternal life in heaven.

These verses tell us that the law brings sin and death which means eternal separation from God in hell. The law is man working his way to heaven through trying to obey the Ten Commandments, good works, religious rites, and rituals. In other words, the law, which was established by God and is perfect, shows us that we cannot get to heaven this way. The law is like having the only perfect diamond in the world and then comparing every other imperfect diamond to that perfect standard -they would all fail. God gave us the law so that we could compare ourselves to the law and see for our own selves that we cannot meet its standards and thus cannot work our way to heaven or become religious enough to make our way to heaven. There has to be another way, if we are to get to heaven.

And, yes, praise God there is another way! There is a way that gives us "victory" and it is "through our Lord Jesus Christ," just as this verse tells us. There are many other verses in the Bible that tell us that the law condemns us but Jesus fulfilled the law for us - much like a parent or friend who helps us when we can not help ourselves. Romans 8:1-3, Romans 10:3-5, Galatians 2:15-17, Galatians 3:23-25, Galatians 5:3-5. When we set aSide everything else that we are trusting in, and believe and trust in Jesus alone for our salvation, then, praise God, we have that great gift of eternal life that we could never purchase or earn on our own!
