On Wednesday, a number of the SMSU athletic teams announced early signings of student-athletes who will be attending SMSU to play baseball, men's and women's basketball, volleyball, softball and wrestling for the 2010-11 school year. It is always an exciting time to when you are able to sign student-athletes this early in the recruiting process. Congratulations to all of our teams who received commitments during the early signing period.

The Mustang women's basketball team, which finished last season with a record of 14-16 (6-14 NSIC), will take part in its first exhibition game of the season against Bethel Saturday at 3 p.m. in the R/A Facility. It will be the first chance to see the 2009-10 women's basketball team in action.

The Mustangs will open the regular season at home on Nov. 20 and 21 when Truman (Mo.) and Hillsdale (Mich.) come to Marshall for the SMSU Classic. Both games begin at 6 p.m. in the R/A Facility.

The No. 22-ranked SMSU men's basketball team will open the regular season on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when the Mustangs host Dordt College. The Mustangs are 2-0 in exhibition play heading into Tuesday's contest. SMSU will compete in the SMSU Classic next weekend where they will play Lewis University (Ill.) on Nov. 20 and Bellevue College (Neb.) on Nov. 21. Both games are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. in the R/A Facility.

The next competition for the Mustang wheelchair Basketball team will be next weekend when the head to WisconsinWhitewater, where they will play University of Illinois men's and women's teams and Edinboro University (Pa.).

The No. 13 Mustang volleyball team picked up a 3-0 victory over Minnesota-Crookston Tuesday night in the Mustangs' final home match of the season. SMSU improves to 23-7 (13-5 NSIC) and will travel to the University of Mary and Northern State this weekend to close regular season play in preparation for NCAA Regional play which will begin next week with a tentative starting date of Nov. 19.

What long-time Mustang head wrestling coach was inducted into the Minnesota Wrestling Hall of Fame this summer?

The Mustang wrestling team will travel to Fargo, ND this Saturday to compete in the Bison Open. This will be the first competition of the year for the Mustangs, who look to improve on a 3-7 overall record (2-5 NSIC) in 2008-09.

The SMSU football team closed out the 2009 season last Saturday with a victory over Minnesota State University-Moorhead. The Mustangs finished the season 5-6 (4-6 NSIC). Last Saturday, we said goodbye to sixteen senior Mustang football players, with the majority of the sixteen beginning their careers at SMSU as the first recruiting class under head coach Eric Eidsness.

Congratulations to Rick Haberman for providing the correct answer to last week's Mustang Hoofprints Trivia Question: How many head coaches have been at the helm of Mustang volleyball at SMSU and can you name them? The Mustang Volleyball program has had four head coaches over 39 seasons of volleyball; Jeri Madden, Deb Denbeck, Ryan Dehnel (interim) and Terry Culhane.
