Hello Mustang Fans!
The SMSU department of athletics is in the final stages of the search process for our women's and men's basketball head coaches. Today, we will have Blaine Patterson on campus with an open session for the Mustang Booster Club and community members at Bruce and Linda Saugstad's home from 6-7 p.m.
Friday, former SMSU women's basketball player Jessica Pelzel will come to Marshall as the final candidate to interview for the position. The open session for Jessica will be held at Steve and Carol Kruger's home from 6-6:45 p.m. on Friday.
Also on Friday, the first candidate for the men's basketball head coaching position, interim head coach Brad Bigler, will be on campus interviewing. Bigler's open session for the booster club and community members will be from 6:45-7:30p.m., also at Steve and Carol Kruger's home.
I would like to thank the Mustang Booster Club and Director of Athletic Development Tim Steinbach for organizing the socials for all our candidates. A special thank you goes out to Todd and Mary Reif, Tim and Judy Moberg, Bruce and Linda Saugstad and Steve and Carol Kruger for opening up your homes and hosting the open sessions for each of our candidates. Thank you so much for all your support!
Earlier this week, we named Cory Sauter the 10th head coach of the Mustang football program. Joining Sauter and assistant head coach and offensive line coach Andy Carr will be a talented duo of defensive coaches.
Chris Guenther will join the Mustangs as defensive coordinator. Guenther previously coached at Culver-Stockton College in Missouri for the past nine seasons, with the last five of those seasons being in a head coaching role. Also joining the defensive staff is Danilo Robinson, who spent the 2009 season as linebackers coach at Sky View High School in Smithfield, Utah. Prior to last season, Robinson coached six seasons at the NCAA Division I level at both Utah State University and University of Louisiana-Monroe. I'd like to welcome both Coach Guenther and Coach Robinson and their families to our Mustang family.
The SMSU tennis team (4-7, 2-4 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) will travel to Bemidji State (3-8, 2-4 NSIC) for an NSIC matchup on Friday at 2 p.m. The series between SMSU and Bemidji State goes back 30 years to 1980. The Mustangs are currently on a four-game winning streak against the Beavers and hold a 24-4 advantage in the series. The two teams met last year when the Mustangs won 5-4.
The Mustang softball team (7-8, 0-0 NSIC) will open its 2010 NSIC schedule on Friday when the Mustangs travel to Minnesota State-Mankato (12-4, 0-0 NSIC) for a 1 p.m. doubleheader. The Mustangs are 21-48 against MSU-Mankato in the series that dates back to 1975. The two team last met in 2009 when the Mavericks ended the Mustangs' season by rallying from a 3-0 deficit to top SMSU 4-3 in 12 innings at the NCAA tournament.
The SMSU baseball team (8-6, 4-0 NSIC) continues NSIC play this weekend with a four-game series versus MSU-Mankato (18-6, 7-1 NSIC) on April 1-2. The two teams will open the series today with a doubleheader in Mankato at the MSU Baseball Complex starting at 1:30 p.m. and will then conclude the four-game set with a doubleheader on Friday in Marshall at Alumni Field starting at 1:30 p.m.
On Monday, the SMSU golf team finished second to Concordia-St. Paul in the Wayne State Spring Invite. The Mustangs return to action on April 10-11, competing at the Augustana Invite at Prairie Green Golf Club in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Good luck to our Mustang teams this weekend. Go Mustangs!
n Last week, no one provided the correct answer to the last Mustang Hoofprints Trivia Question: What is the lowest round shot by an SMSU women's golfer in a tournament or match and what golfer holds that record? Abby Oakland, on April 1, 2006, at the Augustana Invite, Prairie Green Golf Club, in Sioux Falls, S.D., shot a 1-under-par 71, giving her the record for the best round of golf scored by a Mustang golfer.
What SMSU head baseball coach has coached in the most games for the Mustangs in his tenure?
The first person to email me at MustangHoofPrints@SMSU.edu with the correct answer to this question will receive an SMSU Ag Bowl t-shirt. The winner will be announced on The Saturday Morning Mustang Show between 9-10 a.m. on 1400AM each week.
