A fine-feathered future

One of the keys to success in the marketplace is being different from the competition. There needs to be a reason consumers pick your products. AURI works with many different types of Minnesota businesses who are striving to make their products stand out and to differentiate themselves from the crowd.

One such operation is Ferndale Market near Cannon Falls. This family-run turkey farm has been operating for more than 70 years. Operated by John Peterson, the farm produces about 200,000 birds per year, putting them on pasture during the warmer months of the year.

They also have an on-farm retail store they use to market their turkey products as well as foods produced by other Minnesota businesses. It's a unique way to market their unique products.

AURI is working with Ferndale Market to produce some fresh turkey sausages that will bring turkey to market in new ways and at a time of year when many people don't think of turkey. For years, many consumers only thought of turkey during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. However, turkey industry representatives credit innovative companies that have developed value-added turkey offerings with helping to smooth out demand for the birds. Turkey consumption is fairly steady throughout the course of the year.

Minnesota is still a big player in the turkey industry and will produce about 45 million birds this year. While many of those birds will be marketed during the traditional turkey times of Christmas and Thanksgiving, many will be sold at other times as businesses like Ferndale Market work to produce items that help them stand out from the flock.
