Harlan new associate dean
Vernon T. Harlan recently began his duties as the associate dean of academic programs and Student Services at Southwest Minnesota State University.
Harlan came to SMSU from St. Louis Community College in St. Louis, Mo., which is his hometown. During his 15 years there, he split his time between administration and the classroom. He was a professor of criminal justice program there, and was also the program's director.
He received his Ph.D. in human services from Capella University, his master's in criminal justice administration from Boston University and his B.A. in criminal justice from Michigan State University.
SMSU Website wins five awards
Southwest Minnesota State University's website has won five top awards from a leading educational design website, eduStyle.
SMSU redesigned its website a year ago and submitted it for consideration for eduStyle awards. SMSU was nominated in five categories: Best Prospective Student or Admissions Site, Best Visual Design, Best Overall Website, Best Homepage and Best Redesign.
The website www.edustyle.net is a web design gallery dedicated to higher education websites. It is powered by higher education web design professionals.
Voting was split into two categories: Judged and People's Choice awards. A panel of Web experts evaluated the Judged category entrants. The People's Choice winners were judged by all eduStyle web site visitors who voted.
SMSU won both the Judged and People's Choice awards in the Best Prospective Student or Admissions Site and the Best Visual Design categories.
The SMSU site won in the Judged category for Best Overall Web Site and Best Redesign. SMSU won the People's Choice award for Best Homepage.
Award winners were announced July 26-28 at the eduWEB Conference in Chicago, Ill.
